Bulldozer destroys Mayan pyramid in Belize
AP:
A construction company has essentially destroyed one of Belize’s largest Mayan pyramids with backhoes and bulldozers to extract crushed rock for a road-building project, authorities announced on Monday.
The head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology, Jaime Awe, said the destruction at the Nohmul complex in northern Belize was detected late last week. The ceremonial center dates back at least 2,300 years and is the most important site in northern Belize, near the border with Mexico.

My Mother always says that funerals and goodbyes are more for the living than they are for the dead. I like to think that our loved ones that have passed already know how we feel about them. But the living, we need closure. We need funerals and to pay our respects because it helps us fully realize the importance of that person’s life, how they’ve changed our lives, the lives of others, and the world… that no matter how small a single person can feel, they still helped the present happen. They have made this world a better place in some way and they will live on through that.
They will not be forgotten.
Shannon Larratt touched more lives than the average person. He played a huge role in bringing together souls from all over the world. He helped create and fueled the formation and growth of the Modification Community today. A community that many of us would be lost without.
If you’re a part of this Community, even if you’re already familiar with Shannon, take a minute to revisit your roots. Think of all the people you have connected with, all the things you have learned, and ways you have grown because of Shannon Larratt and his contributions.

Sixteen-year-old human trafficking victim Sara Kruzan was sentenced to life in prison without parole when, in a desperate act to escape captivity, she shot her pimp.

he Prague Zoo received a very special Christmas present this year: Western Lowland Gorilla Kijivu delivered a healthy baby boy on December 22, just a few months after another of her offspring died in a freak accident.
The baby’s delivery went smoothly with no problems, according to Prague Zoo staff. Kijivu is an experienced mother, and this is her fourth baby with the zoo’s male Gorilla, Richard.
In July, Kijivu’s second offspring, 5-year-old male Tatu, accidentally hanged himself with a climbing rope in the Gorilla enclosure. This devastating event was called one of the worst tragedies in Prague Zoo’s history, and makes the new infant’s arrival even more significant for the zoo staff and the captive Gorilla population. Western Lowland Gorillas are the most widespread of all Gorilla subspecies, inhabiting the dense rain forests of western and central Africa. In some parts of their range, the population is decreasing by 5% each year as Gorillas are captured as pets or killed for bushmeat. As timber and mining companies encroach on the area, valuable Gorilla habitat is destroyed. The deadly Ebola virus is estimated to have killed up to one-third of wild Gorillas.

I dislike the wording of the following blurb, but I’m extremely sad at the loss of Panbanisha. She was a unique and incredible individual bonobo.
Panbanisha (Nov 17, 1985-Nov 6, 2012) died recently from a cold at The Great Ape Trust. Her entire life was a linguistic experiment that taught us a great deal about the linguistic capabilities of apes, and also what separates our species
from the Great Apes. Future research into the origins of language, language acquisition and interspecies vocal communication will continue to build on what we were able to learn from her accomplishments.(via opakakaek)

So I heard about this story at a Zumbathon I attended this weekend. To my understanding, a 3 year old was bit by a pit bull and needs facial reconstruction surgery. The community however isn’t doing a very good job at helping because the mother and father of the child have a lot of tattoos.
All I could think when I heard this was - Tumblr wouldn’t stand for that.
Here is the link to the news story and to the fundraising site, please signal boost :)Boosting the signal.

Mutant Fish, Eyeless Shrimp & Clawless Crabs: Fallout from the BP Spill (with Video)
by Brian Merchant
Last September, a fisherman pulled nearly 400 pounds of mutated, eyeless shrimp out of the Gulf of Mexico. That was shocking and unusual. But because the media seems to feel that nobody’s interested the aftermath of the 2010 BP spill, the biggest offshore oil disaster in US history, you probably didn’t hear about it.
Since then, we’ve seen a similar tale play out: more mutated shrimp. More deformed shellfish. More fish with repulsive-looking lesions stretching across their scales.
Federal agencies are mum as to what’s causing the deformities, but a number of researchers and locals, mustering all of the common sense they’ve got, think they’ve uncovered a suspect. I won’t give it away, but here’s a hint: it spewed 4.9 million gallons of crude into the Gulf ecosystem…

Israel is rounding up and deporting Africans and will soon be putting tens of thousands of them in detention camps.
Meanwhile, they invited 350 Jewish north American immigrants to the country, 127 of whom will be serving in the Israeli army.
The immigrants arrived today and were greeted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself at a special ceremony, a stark contrast to Israel’s treatment of Africans. The Zionists were welcomed with open arms, while Knesset Members Miri Regev and Danny Danon called Africans “a cancer in our body” and “infiltrators”.
More than 4,800 American, Canadian and British Jews have or will be making aliyah (“ascent”) this year; immigration to the Land of Israel — one of the basic principles of the Zionist ideology.

12-Year-Old Tasered by Cop | Occupy America
A police officer tased a 12-year-old girl inside a Victoria’s Secret Wednesday afternoon at South County Center.
Police say the officer went to Victoria’s Secret looking for the teenager’s mom, who had warrants for her arrest. But it was the teen who got tased.
“This one goes in my chest. It was stuck in there so she had to keep on pulling trying to pull it out,” said Dejamon Baker, as she pointed to a small wound on her chest, and a matching wound on her stomach.
A police spokesman said that the dangerous 12-year old was ” physically getting involved and would not back away,” as officers were arresting the girls mother on outstanding warrants for “unresolved traffic tickets.”
The girl’s mother said that she plans to file a complaint against the policeman who tazed her daughter.

Teen Cancer Patient Can't Get Chemo Because She's Nine Weeks Pregnant - But She Can't Get an Abortion, Either
Esperanza, a teenage girl with acute leukemia living in the Dominican Republic, will die if she doesn’t start chemotherapy treatments as soon as possible. But she’s nine weeks pregnant, and her country banned abortion even in cases where the mother’s life is in danger back in 2010.
And here’s yet another reason it’s stupid to outlaw abortion.
This is what pro-lifers want.
So, how does it feel pro-lifers? How does it feel to know you’ve accomplished this?
Love,
Rabble
So now the mother AND the fetus will die. Must be GOD’S WILL, though.

Last gay Jewish Holocaust survivor dies | The Jerusalem Post
Gad Beck, an anti-Nazi Zionist resistance fighter and the last known gay Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, died on Sunday in Berlin.
…
Perhaps the single most important experience that shaped his life was the wartime effort to rescue his boyfriend. Beck donned a Hitler Youth uniform and entered a deportation center to free his Jewish lover Manfred Lewin, who had declined to separate himself from his family.
